Delhi
is a many coloured canvas where the past co-exists with the present. On
arrival most tend to be taken back a little by the pollution, the crowds,
the smell, the noise and the ceaseless hassles long before you notice the
city's charms. But charming it is, as you will soon discover. The history
of this city is fascinating, the bazaars are a wonderful, the monuments
are among the most architecturally striking in the country and the food is
great.
Delhi
is the capital of India and it's also the travel hub of northern India.
It's an excellent base for visiting Agra and the Taj Mahal and Jaipur
which are not far away. If you're heading north to the Himalaya Mountains
or east to the ghats of Varanasi, you'll probably pass through Delhi.
India's capital city is huge. Here, a succession of capitals built in different locations over the centuries, have left behind hundreds of monuments that reflect diverse influences: from Hinduism to Islam to British-turned-secular independent India. One of the better ways of seeing it all and with better understanding, perhaps, is to divide the city into sections, then go out and explore each area independently. If you try to cram it all in, in one go, you will get confused and in fact find it pretty impossible to achieve.
If
you want crowds, get lost in Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk but for the
feel of Old Delhi without the masses the infrequently visited Nizamudin
where you can see the Hazrat Nizamudin Aulia, a Sufi tomb in an old-style
Moslem district is worth a look see. Of course wherever you are, go
shopping as Delhi is one big emporium offering all India's handicrafts and
art forms. At the end of the day there are numerous parks and gardens in
which to take a relaxing evening amble in which you can gather your
thoughts regarding the following days adventures.
Besides
being the seat of the Central Government, Delhi has an economy
supported by agriculture, tourism, commerce and a growing industry. With
the development of infrastructure facilities, the capital plays host to a
number of national and international events including sports related
events, conferences and seminars. For the visitor, it serves as a perfect
introduction to the cultural wealth, the complexities and dynamism of
India.
Today,
the city is a curious blend of the modern and traditional, skyscrapers,
beautiful gardens and wide tree-lined avenues perpetuate the Mughal
passion of landscaping and architectural excellence. More important,
however, Delhi blends within its folds the great cultural variety of India
and offers an assortment of hotels and resorts to suit all walks of life
and has an abundance of things to see and do. Once visited youll
find it hard to leave and every moment in this colourful capital, will be
an experience you wont forget.
Delhi
is most comfortable between October and February with daytime temperatures
of around 71.5 degree F (22 degree C) and cool evenings. December and
January are decidedly chilly with night time lows of 39 degree F (4 degree
C). The city has a fleeting, but beautiful spring and during the months of
February and March, parks brim over with flowers. The summer, from May to
June, are hot with the mercury soaring to a high of 114 degree F (46
degree C). Delhi does not have much of a rainy season compared to the
other parts of the country and the monsoon lasts three months, from July
to September.
